Today is national #EmployeeAppreciationDay, which I think is awesome! As leaders we absolutely need to show our teams how much we appreciate their hard work and dedication. My questions is, are you doing enough everyday to recognize and appreciate your employees and what they contribute to your business? If your answer isn’t a resounding ‘yes’ you might want to think a little deeper.

So why do you want to reward and recognize your employees on a regular basis? I think the most basic reason is that they need to know that they are performing. We all have a basic need to receive feedback; we like to know how we’re doing! And we particularly like to know if we are doing something really well. Your appreciation doesn’t have to come in the form of big, grandiose gestures. It can be as simple as a quick comment, or emailed note, to say “well done” or “great effort”. It could be something a bit more personal, like a gift card to their favourite coffee shop, or a private lunch date with you! The truth is, it’s often the little things, especially coming from a valued leader, that can make all the difference.

What’s most important is that showing appreciation and providing recognition on the regular will also keep your team engaged and motivated. And we all know that engaged employees perform better, stay longer, and contribute more to your bottom line. It’s important to consider the time and money you save retaining all that valuable experience and knowledge in your business, and how that impacts your most valuable client relationships. Not to mention the time and expense of recruitment and training, if you have to replace that super valuable employee. All because they never felt that they were truly recognized or appreciated.

So today, I hope that you get to spend some quality time celebrating #EmployeeAppreciationDay with your team. Make it a big deal and really show them how much they are valued. And then make sure you do the same tomorrow.
